A WEXFORD LOY
One day in 1980,Longford man, Joe Kilbride, of Elata, Ballyanne, New Ross, Co. Wexford. paid a visit to his neighbouring farmers, Michael and Mary Murphy, Mounthaover, New Ross. While looking at some young ash trees growing on a boundary fence , Joe spotted the head of a Loy on the ground. It had been dumped there and was in a worn out state. Joe, with his Longford origins, recognised what it was, brought it home, and kept it in his shed until the year 2000, when he put an ash handle on to it.
The townsland of Mounthanover consists of just one farm, Murphys. It is situated 3.5 miles north of New Ross, on the N30 road.
This interesting find, will now set us investigating two interesting issues;
1: The history of Loy digging in Co. Wexford.
2: Where was this Loy made, Wexford or some other part on Ireland ?
